Twin brothers Simon and Steve Smith’s ancestors began Toorallie as a pioneering merino sheep ranch in Bombala, NSW, in 1825. Having grown up on the Toorallie farm, Simon and Steve’s determination to carry on the family Merino wool legacy is grounded in their family’s dauntless efforts to produce, spin, and knit their wool. The Smith family operated their three Toorallie sheep stations, producing top-quality Merino wool for generations, before evolving into a knitwear mill and fashion brand in 1991.
By the late 90s, economic times had gotten tough—it was apparent to Simon and Steve that Toorallie needed to transform to survive. Australian manufacturing was in decline as offshore production, with its lower costs and efficiency, began to outcompete domestic knitwear producers. Determined to sustain their family's legacy, Simon and Steve secured the trademark from their parents and moved to Melbourne to sustainably transform the Toorallie brand into something new and more ambitious.
Today, Toorallie fine Merino apparel is designed in Melbourne and knitted from Australian wool raised on farms held to the exacting criteria of the Responsible Wool Standard. Toorallie’s technology-infused garments, with their luxurious feel, innovative contemporary design, and visual richness, are the choice of discerning luxury fashion enthusiasts everywhere.

Merino’s considerable sustainability advantages, rich softness, durability, and versatility make it the ideal medium for trend-setting luxury fashion innovation.
